About Olive Tree

The Olea europaea, commonly known as the Olive Tree, is a small evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region. It is famed for its durable, gnarled trunk and silvery-green leaves. Olive trees are cultivated widely for their oil-rich fruit and are also valued as ornamental plants in gardens. These trees can live for hundreds of years, making them a symbol of longevity and peace. They thrive in hot, dry climates but are surprisingly adaptable and can be grown in containers in cooler areas if protected from severe winter conditions.

How to care for Olive Tree

Water

Water young Olive trees regularly to establish roots, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Once established, they are drought-resistant. In absence of rain, water every two to three weeks. Container-grown olives will require more frequent watering.

Light

Olive trees require full sun to produce fruit effectively. A minimum of six hours of direct sunlight per day is essential. Less light may result in fewer fruits and a less vigorous tree.

Nutrients

Olive trees require minimal fertilization. Feed them once a year in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. In nutrient-rich soils, additional fertilization may not be necessary. Avoid over-fertilizing as it can lead to excessive vegetation growth at the expense of fruit production.

Temperature

Olive trees prefer hot, dry summers and cool winters. They can tolerate temperatures down to about -10°C but require protection from heavy frosts. Ideal growth temperatures are between 25°C and 35°C.
