About Spider Plant

Chlorophytum comosum, commonly known as the Spider Plant, is a perennial herb notable for its grass-like, arching variegated leaves and its production of small plantlets on hanging stolons. This plant is native to tropical and southern Africa but has become widely popular as an indoor plant globally due to its ease of care and ability to adapt to a variety of conditions. Spider Plants are well-regarded for their air-purifying qualities, removing pollutants like formaldehyde and xylene from indoor air. The graceful, cascading growth habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets or high shelves.

How to care for Spider Plant

Water

Water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Spider Plants prefer moderate moisture and do well with a good soak when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant's growth slows.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate a range of light conditions, including part sun to shade. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves, especially the variegated varieties.

Nutrients

Feed the Spider Plant monthly during the spring and summer with a general-purpose liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. During the fall and winter, reduce feeding to every other month. Avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to brown tips on the leaves.

Temperature

Spider Plants prefer average room temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). They can tolerate temperature fluctuations but should be protected from extreme cold, which can damage the leaves and roots.
