Heptapleurum arboricola, commonly known as the Schefflera or Umbrella Tree, is a popular houseplant renowned for its unique, glossy, star-shaped leaf arrangements. Native to Taiwan and Hainan, this plant typically features clusters of 7-9 leaflets, resembling an umbrella, hence its common name. How to care for Schefflera
Water
Water your Schefflera when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure thorough watering until water drains from the bottom of the pot, but allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot.
Light
Place your Schefflera in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch the leaves. If light conditions are too low, the plant may become leggy and lose foliage density.
Nutrients
Feed your Schefflera with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once every two to three weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding to once a month during the fall and cease in the winter. Over-fertilization can lead to leggy growth, so ensure to follow the recommended dosage on the fertilizer package.
Temperature
Schefflera prefers temperatures between 60 to 80°F (15 to 27°C). It should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant.
