Tagetes erecta, commonly known as Mexican marigold or African marigold, is a robust annual plant native to Mexico and Central America. Characterized by its bright orange, yellow, and gold blooms, it can reach heights of up to 120 cm. The flowers are large and often pompom-shaped, making them popular in ornamental gardens. They are also used in religious and cultural ceremonies, especially in Day of the Dead celebrations. Besides its ornamental use, Tagetes erecta is also recognized for its use in traditional medicine and as a natural insect repellent, thanks to its powerful aroma.

How to care for Mexican marigold
Water
Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering by ensuring good drainage. Reduce watering frequency during cooler months to prevent root rot.
Light
Provide full sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours a day. This plant loves bright conditions and will produce more blooms in direct sunlight. Partial shade is beneficial in extremely hot climates.
Nutrients
For optimal growth, feed Tagetes erecta with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to lush foliage at the expense of blooms. A phosphorus-rich fertilizer can encourage more vibrant flower production.
Temperature
Tagetes erecta thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 24°C. It can tolerate higher temperatures but may require partial shade and increased watering. Avoid exposure to frost as it is not frost-tolerant.
