Phaseolus vulgaris, commonly called the common bean, is a warm-season annual legume domesticated independently in Mesoamerica and the Andes. It includes bush and pole growth habits, with trifoliate leaves, slender twining stems in climbing types, and papilionaceous white to purple flowers borne in racemes. Pods range from tender, stringless snap types to fibrous shells for dry seed harvest, maturing in roughly 50–100 days depending on cultivar and climate. As a nitrogen fixer, it forms nodules with Rhizobium species, enriching soil while growing. Plants are primarily self-pollinating, though bees may visit flowers. Seeds display exceptional diversity in size, shape, and color (black, pinto, kidney, navy). Widely cultivated for fresh pods, shellies, and dry grain, it thrives in fertile, well-drained loams with consistent moisture. While highly nutritious when properly cooked, raw or undercooked seeds can contain lectins that cause gastrointestinal distress. Compact habit, rapid maturity, and high productivity make it an excellent choice for gardens and containers, especially when trellised for pole varieties.

How to care for Common bean
Water
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. After emergence, supply about 2.5–3.5 cm (1–1.5 in) of water weekly, more in hot, windy weather or sandy soils. Water deeply and less often to encourage strong roots, and irrigate early so foliage dries quickly. Avoid swings between drought and saturation, which cause blossom drop and tough pods. Mulch to conserve moisture. For dry beans, taper irrigation as pods yellow and parch; for snap beans, maintain steadier moisture to preserve tenderness and prevent stringiness.
Light
Provide full sun: at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily, with 8–10 preferred for yield and pod quality. Insufficient light leads to leggy growth and poor set. In regions with extreme summer heat, light afternoon shade can reduce blossom drop and fiber development, particularly in snap beans. Most cultivars are relatively daylength-tolerant, though some heritage types flower best under shorter days. Space plants adequately so lower leaves receive light and dry quickly after dew or irrigation.
Nutrients
Being a legume, common bean relies on symbiosis with Rhizobium (notably Rhizobium etli) to fix nitrogen. In soils without recent bean cultivation, inoculate seed at sowing. Avoid heavy pre-plant nitrogen; excessive N triggers lush foliage at the expense of pods. Instead, incorporate compost and a balanced, low-N fertilizer (e.g., 3-5-7 or 5-10-10). Side-dress lightly at first bloom and again mid-pod set. Ensure adequate phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur; trace molybdenum and boron aid nodulation and flowering. Maintain soil pH near 6.0–7.0 for best nutrient availability.
Temperature
Common bean is frost-tender. Sow when soil reaches at least 16–18°C (60–65°F) and is warming. Ideal growth occurs with days at 20–30°C (68–86°F) and nights at 15–20°C (59–68°F). Temperatures below 10°C (50°F) stall growth and increase disease risk; frost kills plants. Heat above ~32–35°C (90–95°F), especially with warm nights, reduces flower retention and pod set. In very hot climates, provide afternoon shade and consistent moisture. Use row covers for early protection, removing at flowering to ensure pollination.
