About Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum, commonly known as Japanese Maple, is a deciduous shrub or small tree reaching heights of 6 to 10 meters, often growing as an understory plant in shady woodlands. It is well-known for its beautifully shaped and distinctly colored leaves. The leaves are usually 5 to 10 cm long and wide, with five to seven pointed lobes, and range in color from green to red, purple, and bronze, often with exquisite autumn coloring. How to care for Japanese Maple

Water

Water regularly, especially in the growing season, to maintain evenly moist soil. Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. Japanese Maples are particularly susceptible to over-watering and under-watering, so consistency is key. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant's water requirements decrease.

Light

This species thrives in partial shade but can also adapt to full sun, especially in cooler climates. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense afternoon sun, particularly in warmer areas, to prevent leaf scorch.

Nutrients

Fertilize the Japanese Maple sparingly since it is sensitive to over-fertilization. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer, ensuring it is formulated for use on acid-loving plants. Avoid high nitrogen content as it can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of the root system.

Temperature

Acer palmatum prefers temperate climates with distinct seasons. It can tolerate mild frost but protection from extreme cold and heat is necessary. Ideally, keep temperatures between 15°C to 24°C (59°F to 75°F) during the growing season.
