About English ivy

Hedera helix, commonly known as English ivy, is a vigorous and hardy evergreen vine native to Europe and Western Asia. Noted for its ability to climb surfaces through aerial rootlets, it can reach considerable heights as it matures. This plant features small, dark green leaves which are lobed in its juvenile stage and become more heart-shaped as it matures. Hedera helix is highly adaptable to indoor and outdoor environments, making it a popular choice for ground covers, wall covers, and decorative elements in containers. Besides its ornamental use, English ivy has been studied for its air-purifying capabilities, capable of absorbing molds and other indoor pollutants.

How to care for English ivy

Water

Water English ivy thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again. The plant prefers evenly moist soil but is quite drought tolerant once established. During winter, reduce watering but never allow the soil to completely dry out.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate low to medium light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn, while too little light can lead to leggy growth and sparse leaves.

Nutrients

Feed English ivy sparingly; a balanced liquid fertilizer can be used monthly during the growth period (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and cease during winter, as overfertilization can lead to poor health and leaf discoloration.

Temperature

English ivy thrives in moderate temperatures, typically between 50°F (10°C) and 70°F (21°C). It can tolerate colder temperatures but is not frost-hardy. Keep it away from cold drafts and extreme heat sources.
