About Garden Strawberry

Fragaria × ananassa, commonly known as the Garden Strawberry, is a widely cultivated hybrid species of the genus Fragaria. It is known for its distinctive red fruit which is aromatic, juicy, and sweet. Originating in the 18th century in Europe through the crossbreeding of Fragaria virginiana from North America and Fragaria chiloensis from Chile, this plant is now grown globally. Strawberry plants are perennial and grow well in milder climates. They feature a rosette of leaves at the base, white flowers, and runners that help in vegetative propagation. The fruit is rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, and has numerous culinary uses from fresh consumption to being processed into jams and desserts.

How to care for Garden Strawberry

Water

Strawberries require consistent moisture for optimum growth, especially during fruit bearing. Water the plants deeply at least once a week with 1 to 1.5 inches of water. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases and fruit rot.

Light

Garden strawberries require full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Proper sunlight is crucial for fruit development and helps ensure high-quality, sweet berries.

Nutrients

For optimal growth, apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer monthly during the growing season. In preparation for flowering and fruiting, use a high-potassium fertilizer to enhance fruit quality. Avoid over-fertilizing as it can lead to excessive foliage with poor fruiting.

Temperature

Strawberries thrive best in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Protect plants from extreme heat and frost, and consider using row covers to extend the growing season.
