Gardenia jasminoides, commonly known as Gardenia, is a flowering plant in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, Australasia, and Oceania, Gardenias are well-loved for their shiny, dark green leaves and highly fragrant, white or pale yellow flowers. They typically bloom in late spring and early summer. How to care for Gardenia
Water
Gardenias require keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water them when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant’s growth naturally slows down.
Light
Place gardenias in a location that receives partial shade. They benefit from direct morning sunlight and afternoon shade, particularly in hotter climates, to protect them from intense heat which can damage blooms and leaves.
Nutrients
Gardenias benefit from monthly fertilization during the growing season with an acid-forming azalea or camellia fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can lead to salt accumulation, which can damage the roots. Avoid fertilizing gardenias in the fall to prevent the promotion of tender growth that could be damaged by cold winter temperatures.
Temperature
Gardenias thrive in a temperature range of 60-75°F (15-24°C). Protect them from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) as cold temperatures can lead to bud drop and frost damage.
