Trifolium pratense, commonly known as red clover, is a short-lived perennial legume in the pea family (Fabaceae) valued for forage, cover cropping, and pollinator support. It forms a leafy crown with trifoliate leaves marked by a pale V-shaped chevron and produces dense, rose-red to magenta, globose flower heads 1.5β3 cm across from late spring through fall. Plants typically reach 20β80 cm tall and develop a stout taproot with fibrous laterals that improve soil structure and drought resilience. As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it hosts Rhizobium bacteria that form root nodules and supply much of its nitrogen needs, reducing fertilizer inputs. Red clover thrives in cool, temperate climates and well-drained loams with near-neutral pH. It is widely used in pastures, hay, green manure rotations, and as a nectar source for bumblebees and other pollinators. While often grown agriculturally, it can be cultivated in containers or garden beds, where regular cutting encourages bushy growth and repeated flowering over its typical 2β3 year lifespan.

Water
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. For garden or container plants, water deeply when the top 2β3 cm of soil is dry, supplying about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water per week from rain plus irrigation. Seedlings need consistently moist, fine-tilth soil until established. Mature plants tolerate brief dry spells thanks to a taproot, but prolonged drought reduces flowering and nodulation. Use mulch to conserve moisture and prefer morning watering at the base to keep foliage dry and limit fungal issues.
Light
Provide full sun for 6β8+ hours daily to maximize growth, nitrogen fixation, and flower production. Red clover tolerates light partial shade, but shaded plants elongate, lodge more readily, and bloom less. In containers or small gardens, place in unobstructed southern exposure; indoors, it is not ideal, but the brightest south-facing window or supplemental LED grow lights (12β14 hours) can sustain short-term growth. Good air movement and spacing help reduce foliar diseases in dense, sunny stands.
Nutrients
As a legume, red clover fixes atmospheric nitrogen and needs little or no added N once nodulated. Inoculate seed with the correct Rhizobium strain before sowing, especially in new fields or sterile potting mixes. Focus on phosphorus and potassium based on soil tests; modest applications of P and K support root growth and regrowth after cutting. Maintain soil pH near 6.2β7.0 with lime if acidic. Use compost or a low-N, balanced fertilizer at establishment; avoid heavy nitrogen, which favors grasses over clover.
Temperature
Red clover is a cool-season perennial best suited to USDA Zones 3β8. Germination is reliable at 15β24Β°C; vegetative growth is most vigorous around 18β24Β°C. Established plants are winter hardy and tolerate subfreezing temperatures, surviving below β20Β°C with good drainage and snow cover. Heat above 30Β°C with drought can induce summer dormancy, shorten lifespan, and reduce flowering. Provide consistent moisture and a light mulch in hot spells, and avoid planting in frost pockets that hold standing cold air.
