Cucurbita pepo is a highly variable species encompassing pumpkins, zucchinis, acorn and pattypan squashes. An annual, warm-season vine or bush with coarse, bristly leaves and hollow, ridged stems, it bears large, yellow-orange, monoecious flowers that open at dawn and attract specialist squash bees and other pollinators. Fruits range widely in shape, size, and rind texture; a five-angled, woody fruit peduncle is characteristic of the species. Native to Mesoamerica, C. pepo has been domesticated for millennia and is now grown worldwide in temperate to subtropical climates for edible immature and mature fruits, seeds, and flowers. Plants have a shallow, spreading root system and thrive in fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soils with consistent moisture and high light. While edible cultivars are safe, intensely bitter fruit indicates elevated cucurbitacins and should not be consumed. Rapid growth, heavy nutrient demand, and susceptibility to pests such as squash vine borer and diseases like powdery mildew make cultural practicesācrop rotation, sanitation, and spacingāimportant for healthy production.

Water
Provide 1ā1.5 inches (25ā38 mm) of water weekly, more in hot, windy weather. Water deeply and infrequently to moisten the top 8ā12 inches of soil; morning is best. Avoid wetting foliageādrip lines or soaker hoses reduce powdery mildew. Keep soil evenly moist from flowering through fruit enlargement to minimize misshapen fruit and end-rotālike symptoms. Mulch 5ā8 cm to stabilize moisture and temperature.
Light
Requires full sun: minimum 6ā8 hours of direct light daily; 8ā10+ hours yields best fruit quality. Choose an open site with high sky exposure and good air movement to dry leaves quickly after dew or rain. Avoid shade from taller crops or structures, which encourages spindly growth and powdery mildew. In cool, cloudy climates, reflective mulch can boost light and warmth; under intense summer sun, light-colored mulch helps keep roots cooler.
Nutrients
Heavy feeder. Incorporate 2ā4 inches of compost and a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 5-10-10) at planting. Side-dress with nitrogen (blood meal, urea, or 21-0-0 at 0.25ā0.5 cup per 10 ft of row) when vines run and again at early fruit set. In containers, feed every 2ā3 weeks with a complete liquid (N-P-K plus micronutrients) at label rates. Avoid excessive nitrogen after flowering to prevent leafy growth at the expense of fruit.
Temperature
Warm-season, frostātender. Optimal growth occurs with days 70ā90°F (21ā32°C) and nights 60ā70°F (16ā21°C). Soil temperature for sowing should be at least 65°F (18°C), ideally 70ā95°F (21ā35°C). Chilling below 50°F (10°C) stunts plants; light frost kills foliage. Sustained heat above 95°F (35°C), especially with warm nights, can reduce pollination and fruit setāprovide afternoon shade or evaporative cooling in extreme heat. Use row covers or cloches early season; harden off transplants.
