About Brazilian joyweed

Alternanthera brasiliana is a fast-growing, tropical subshrub in the amaranth family valued for its richly colored foliage ranging from bronze-green to burgundy and magenta, depending on light and cultivar. Typically 40–100 cm tall, it forms a bushy mound with opposite, oval leaves and produces small, white to pale flowers in axillary clusters that are largely ornamental only. Native to the tropical Americas, it thrives in warmth and humidity and is commonly used as a vibrant groundcover, edging plant, or container filler. In frost-free climates it behaves as a perennial; elsewhere it’s grown as a warm-season annual or overwintered indoors. It responds well to pinching and hard pruning, which stimulate dense, colorful growth. The plant prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil and consistent moisture, though it tolerates short dry spells once established. Easily propagated from softwood cuttings, it roots quickly in water or a light potting mix. Expect best foliage color in full sun to bright light with brief afternoon shade in very hot regions.

How to care for Brazilian joyweed

Water

Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Outdoors, aim for about 1 inch (25 mm) of total water weekly, adjusting for rainfall, heat, and wind. In containers, water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) feel dry, then let excess drain freely; never allow the pot to sit in saucer water. Reduce watering modestly in cooler, low-light periods to avoid root stress. Mulch garden beds to stabilize moisture and temperature.

Light

Provide full sun to bright light for strongest color: at least 4–6 hours of direct sun daily. In very hot climates, give dappled or light afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch while maintaining vibrancy. Indoors, place near a south or west window, or supplement with bright grow lights for 12–14 hours daily. Lower light leads to greener, stretchier growth; increase light gradually to avoid stress or bleaching.

Nutrients

Feed lightly but regularly during the warm growing season. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10 or 12-4-8) at half strength every 4–6 weeks, or apply a slow-release, balanced granular at label rates in spring. Excess nitrogen can cause lanky, pale growth, so prioritize moderation and even NPK. Incorporate compost to boost micronutrients and moisture retention. Flush containers every few months with plain water to prevent fertilizer salt buildup.

Temperature

Best growth occurs between 65–95°F (18–35°C). Protect from temperatures below 50–55°F (10–13°C); frost will severely damage or kill foliage. Short hot spells above 95°F (35°C) are tolerated if soil moisture is maintained and plants receive brief afternoon shade. Indoors, keep above 60°F (16°C) and away from cold drafts. Overwinter container plants in a warm, bright spot and prune lightly in late winter to encourage vigorous spring regrowth.
