Ribes nigrum, commonly called blackcurrant, is a cold-hardy, deciduous shrub valued for aromatic foliage and intensely flavored, vitamin C–rich berries. Native to cool, moist regions of northern Europe and northern Asia, it forms a multi-stemmed clump 1–2 m tall, bearing palmately lobed leaves and small greenish flowers in pendent racemes in spring. Fruits ripen mid to late summer, with glossy black skins and deep purple juice high in anthocyanins. Plants prefer fertile, moisture-retentive, slightly acidic to neutral soils and cool summers; reliable cropping depends on regular watering and annual renewal pruning, as berries form best on 1- to 3-year-old wood. Blackcurrants are self-fertile but cross-pollination can improve yield. Modern cultivars often resist white pine blister rust, though pests such as aphids, currant sawfly, and big bud mite may occur. Beyond culinary uses—juices, jams, cordials (cassis)—the leaves are also aromatic and used in teas. In the landscape, they thrive in sheltered, well-mulched positions with partial shade in hotter climates.

How to care for Blackcurrant
Water
Keep soil consistently moist, never waterlogged. Aim for about 25–40 mm of water per week during active growth and fruit swell, delivered as one to two deep irrigations. Water at the base early in the day to avoid wet foliage and disease. Mulch to reduce evaporation. In containers, water when the top 2–3 cm of mix is dry; ensure excellent drainage. Reduce watering markedly after harvest and during winter dormancy, but do not allow prolonged drought, which can damage shallow feeder roots.
Light
Provide full sun in cool, maritime or northern climates for maximum yield and sweetness. In regions with hot summers, give morning sun with light afternoon shade (dappled or 30–40% shade cloth) to prevent heat stress and sunscald. Blackcurrants tolerate partial shade better than many fruit crops, but too much shade reduces flowering and sugar accumulation. Ensure good air movement and avoid deep shade under trees. A minimum of 4–6 hours of direct sun daily is recommended, adjusted for local heat intensity.
Nutrients
Start with a soil test. In early spring, apply a balanced but potassium-forward feed (e.g., 4-3-8 or add sulfate of potash) to support flowering and fruit set. Top-dress annually with 2–5 cm of compost or well-rotted manure to improve moisture retention and micronutrients. Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of berries and increases pest pressure. For containers, use a slow-release fertilizer and supplement with liquid seaweed during fruit swell. Cease fertilizing by midsummer to allow wood to harden.
Temperature
Blackcurrant is very cold hardy, tolerating winter lows to about −25 to −30°C depending on cultivar, and requires substantial winter chill to set buds well. Flowers can be nipped by late spring frosts; site in a frost-sheltered, low-wind position or use row covers during cold snaps. Optimal growth occurs in cool summers (15–24°C). Prolonged heat above ~30°C can reduce fruit quality and yield; provide shade cloth and extra mulch in hot climates. Avoid planting in frost pockets or exposed, desiccating sites.
