Triticum aestivum, commonly called bread wheat, is an annual, cool-season grass domesticated in the Fertile Crescent and now the world’s most widely grown cereal. A hexaploid species (AABBDD genomes), it forms erect, hollow culms 60–120 cm tall with flat, glabrous leaves and a terminal, many-flowered spike. Each spikelet produces grains (caryopses) rich in starch and gluten-forming proteins (gliadins and glutenins), which confer the viscoelastic dough properties prized for leavened bread. The plant is largely self-pollinating, with wind-assisted pollen movement. Cultivars are grouped into winter types, which require vernalization and overwinter as seedlings, and spring types, which mature within a single growing season. Wheat thrives in well-drained loams, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and cool, bright conditions; it is sensitive to waterlogging and severe heat during flowering and grain fill. Major biotic constraints include rusts (stripe, leaf, stem), powdery mildew, and aphids; cultural practices and resistant cultivars are key to management. Beyond grain, straw is used for animal bedding, mulch, and fiber. While primarily an agricultural crop, small plots can be grown in gardens or containers for educational or culinary purposes.

How to care for Bread wheat
Water
Wheat prefers consistent, moderate moisture with excellent drainage. After sowing, keep the top 2–3 cm of soil evenly moist until emergence. Provide roughly 25–40 mm of water per week from tillering through grain fill, adjusting for rainfall and soil texture. Prioritize irrigations at tillering, booting/heading, and early grain fill; avoid water stress during flowering. Water deeply but infrequently to build robust roots, and prevent waterlogging at all stages. Reduce or stop irrigation 2–3 weeks before harvest to promote dry-down and limit lodging.
Light
Provide full sun—at least 6–8 hours of unobstructed light daily. Wheat is generally a long-day plant; abundant daylength and high light accelerate tillering and flowering, while shade reduces stem strength, tiller number, and grain set. Space rows to enhance canopy light penetration and airflow (about 15–20 cm in garden plots), and orient plantings north–south when possible. Indoor culture suits short-term wheatgrass only; grain production requires outdoor sun. Avoid shading from trees, buildings, or tall companion crops.
Nutrients
Base fertility on a soil test. Incorporate phosphorus and potassium before sowing; wheat benefits from available P near the seed. Split nitrogen: apply 30–40% at planting, then topdress at tillering and again at stem elongation (jointing). Typical seasonal N needs are 60–150 kg/ha, adjusted for soil organic matter, previous legumes, and yield goals. Add sulfur (10–20 kg/ha) where deficient; zinc may be needed on high-pH soils. Avoid excessive N that promotes lodging and disease; maintain an approximate N:S balance near 10:1.
Temperature
A cool-season annual, wheat germinates best at 12–25°C and can emerge at 3–5°C. Winter types require vernalization (4–12 weeks near 0–7°C) to induce flowering; spring types do not. Optimal vegetative growth occurs around 15–20°C, with grain filling favored at 15–24°C. Plants tolerate light frosts when hardened, but are sensitive at heading/anthesis; brief freezes near −2°C can injure flowers. Heat above 30–32°C during flowering and grain fill reduces yield and quality. Shelter from hot, desiccating winds in dry climates.
