About Bugleweed

Ajuga reptans, commonly called bugleweed or carpet bugle, is a low-growing, rhizomatous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae) prized for its dense, fast-spreading groundcover habit. Glossy, spoon-shaped leaves form tight rosettes that knit together to suppress weeds, while spring to early summer brings short spikes of violet-blue flowers that feed bees and other pollinators. Numerous cultivars offer foliage in green, bronze, burgundy, or variegated patterns, adding color where turf or taller perennials struggle. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils and partial shade, yet tolerates full sun in cooler climates if moisture is consistent. In warm, humid regions it prefers morning sun and afternoon shade to avoid stress and crown rot. Ajuga is often planted between stepping stones, under shrubs, on slopes for erosion control, or in containers and hanging baskets where it can cascade. Though vigorous, it is generally manageable by edging or division. In some regions it can self-spread beyond beds, so site thoughtfully and monitor its expansion.

How to care for Bugleweed

Water

Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and in spring bloom. Provide roughly 2.5 cm of water per week from rain or irrigation; increase slightly in sandy soils and during heat. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage resilient roots. In containers, water when the top 2–3 cm of mix is dry, letting excess drain completely. Avoid chronically wet crowns and evening overhead watering, which predispose plants to fungal diseases.

Light

Ajuga thrives in partial shade to light shade (about 3–6 hours of gentle sun). In cool-summer areas it tolerates full sun with ample moisture; in warm regions, protect from strong afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch and stress. Deep shade reduces flowering and may thin the mat. Variegated and bronze cultivars often color best with bright, indirect light or morning sun. Indoors, provide a bright, cool spot and avoid dim corners.

Nutrients

Ajuga is a light feeder. Work 2–3 cm of compost into the bed each spring, or apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) at half label rate once as growth begins. Container plants can receive a dilute (¼–½ strength) liquid feed monthly during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which weakens rosettes and encourages crown rot. Never fertilize drought-stressed plants; water first and feed after rainfall or irrigation.

Temperature

Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9, Ajuga reptans endures winter cold down to about −35 to −40°C (−31 to −40°F) once established. Optimal growth occurs between 13–24°C (55–75°F). In hot summers (>32°C/90°F), provide afternoon shade and consistent moisture to reduce stress and disease risk. Winter mulch in very cold, open sites helps prevent frost heave. Avoid sites with heat-reflective surfaces; sustained high soil temperatures and humidity increase the chance of crown rot.
