Radermachera sinica, commonly sold as the China doll plant, is a subtropical evergreen tree prized indoors for its finely textured, glossy, bipinnate foliage. In nature it can become a medium to large canopy tree, while as a houseplant it remains compact with regular pruning. The delicate leaflets give it a refined, fern-like look, yet it is woody and responds well to tip pinching to maintain bushiness. It is notably sensitive to abrupt environmental changes, often shedding leaves when moved, overwatered, or exposed to low light or drafts. In its native range it bears large, fragrant, tubular white to pale-yellow blossoms, though flowering is rare in indoor culture. Provide bright, filtered light, evenly moist but well-drained soil, and moderate humidity to prevent leaf drop and spider mite issues. With stable conditions, an airy potting mix, and conservative fertilizing, it grows steadily and forms a lush, upright specimen that suits bright rooms and offices.

Water
Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of the potting mix feels dry, then allow excess to drain completely. Aim for evenly moist, never soggy, conditions; prolonged wetness triggers root rot and leaf drop. Reduce frequency in winter and after pruning. Use room-temperature water and avoid softened water high in salts. An airy, well-drained substrate and a pot with drainage holes are essential to maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging.
Light
Provide bright, indirect light for best form and color. A few hours of gentle morning sun are beneficial, but avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch leaflets. Too little light leads to legginess and shedding. Indoors, place near an east or bright north window, or a filtered south/west exposure. If using grow lights, supply 10–12 hours daily and increase intensity gradually to prevent shock.
Nutrients
Feed lightly during active growth (spring through early autumn) with a balanced, dilute fertilizer (for example, 1/4–1/2 strength 10-10-10 or 12-6-6) every 4–6 weeks. China dolls are salt-sensitive: err on the side of underfeeding and flush the pot thoroughly with plain water every 2–3 months to prevent buildup. Avoid fertilizing in winter or when the plant is stressed, recently repotted, or experiencing leaf drop. Organic, slow-release options work well if applied sparingly.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures are 18–27°C (65–80°F) with minimal fluctuation. Avoid cold drafts and keep above 13°C (55°F); brief dips below this can cause leaf loss. High heat with low humidity promotes spider mites, so increase humidity and air movement in summer. Do not place near heating or AC vents. Outdoors in mild climates, protect from cold nights and bring inside well before frost.
