About Common Fig

Ficus carica, commonly known as the Common Fig, is a species of flowering plant in the Moraceae family, native to the Mediterranean and western Asia. It is a deciduous tree or large shrub, growing to heights of 7–10 meters (23–33 feet), with smooth white bark and deeply lobed leaves. Known primarily for its fruit, the fig, it has been cultivated since ancient times and is highly valued both for its ornamental appeal and edible fruits. The fruits appear on the spring new growth and provide a valuable food source for wildlife, while also being widely used in cooking and baking.

How to care for Common Fig

Water

Water regularly during the growing and fruiting seasons, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant is dormant. Figs do not like overly soggy soil, so ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Light

Position your fig tree in full sun to partial shade. Ideally, it should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ample sunlight is crucial for fruit development and ripening.

Nutrients

Fertilize Ficus carica during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer every four weeks. Decrease feeding to once every eight weeks in the winter. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or manure, can also be beneficial to support healthy growth and fruit production.

Temperature

Ficus carica prefers warm temperatures and is frost sensitive. Ideal growing temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). In regions with harsh winters, grow in containers that can be moved indoors or provide substantial winter protection.
