About Cuban Oregano

Coleus amboinicus, commonly known as Cuban Oregano, is a perennial succulent known for its robust aroma and medicinal properties. It features thick, fleshy leaves that are furry on the surface and possess a strong, pungent odor reminiscent of oregano when crushed. The plant's sprawling growth habit makes it suitable for hanging baskets and ground covers. It blooms sporadically, producing small, lavender-pink flowers. Originally from the warm climates of Southern Africa, it is now widespread in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide and is often used in cooking and traditional medicine.

How to care for Cuban Oregano

Water

Water Cuban Oregano moderately, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between watering sessions. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it a relatively low-maintenance plant in terms of watering requirements.

Light

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. At least 6 hours of sunlight daily is optimal for vigorous growth and essential oils production in the leaves.

Nutrients

Cuban Oregano requires minimal fertilization. A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer applied once a month during the growing season is generally sufficient. Avoid over-fertilization to prevent the accumulation of nutrients which can endanger the plant's health.

Temperature

Prefers warm temperatures and does well in environments that are consistently above 60°F (15°C). It is sensitive to frost, so it should be moved indoors or provided with protection when temperatures begin to dip below the ideal range.
