How to care for Dahlia

Water

Water dahlias deeply once or twice a week, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Over-watering or allowing the plants to sit in water can lead to root issues. During peak summer days, adjust watering based on soil moisture and weather conditions.

Light

Dahlias require full sun to bloom profusely. A minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight is ideal. Locations with morning sunlight and afternoon shade can also be beneficial in hotter climates.

Nutrients

Dahlias benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4 weeks starting from when the plants are about 6 inches tall until mid-summer. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers as they can promote lush foliage at the expense of blooms.

Temperature

Dahlias perform best in moderate temperatures and can handle short periods of heat. Ideal temperature range is between 60°F and 75°F (15°C to 24°C). They are not frost-tolerant, and care should be taken to protect or lift tubers before the first frost.
