About Hyacinth

Hyacinthus orientalis, commonly known as Hyacinth, is a perennial flowering plant native to the eastern Mediterranean, including parts of Turkey and the Middle East. It is renowned for its vibrant, fragrant blooms that appear in early spring. The plant typically grows from a bulb, reaching about 6-12 inches in height. The star-shaped flowers cluster along dense, upright spikes and are available in a variety of colors including pink, purple, red, white, and yellow. Hyacinth's scent is highly aromatic, making them a popular choice for gardens and floral displays, both outdoors and indoors.

How to care for Hyacinth

Water

Water Hyacinths thoroughly upon planting and maintain moist, but not soggy, soil throughout the growing season. After flowering, reduce watering gradually as the foliage begins to die back to promote bulb dormancy.

Light

Place Hyacinths in full sun to partial shade. Adequate exposure to sunlight is necessary for vigorous growth and optimal flowering. They can tolerate light shade but may not bloom as profusely.

Nutrients

For optimal growth, feed Hyacinth bulbs with a balanced, slow-release bulb fertilizer when planting and again as the green leaves appear in the spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers as they can promote foliage at the expense of blooms.

Temperature

Hyacinths thrive in moderate climates with temperatures ranging from 35 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 18 degrees Celsius). They need a period of cool dormancy in the winter, preferably between 35 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
