Ficus benghalensis, the Indian banyan, is a massive evergreen fig native to the Indian subcontinent. In nature it begins life as an epiphyte, sending down aerial prop roots that thicken into pillar-like trunks, eventually forming vast, multi-stemmed groves with a broad, shady canopy. Mature trees can spread over hectares and live for centuries, playing key ecological and cultural roles as keystone fruiting trees and sacred village landmarks. Leaves are large, leathery, and elliptical, with prominent veins and milky latex in the tissues. Tiny syconia (fig fruits) are pollinated by species-specific fig wasps. In containers, banyans remain far smaller yet still produce characteristic aerial roots under warm, humid, bright conditions. They prefer freely draining, slightly acidic media and steady warmth. While robust and drought-tolerant once established outdoors in frost-free climates, indoor specimens appreciate consistent moisture, high light, and periodic pruning to manage size and encourage branching. Outdoors, expansive roots can disrupt paving and foundations, so situate well away from structures.

How to care for Indian banyan
Water
Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of the mix is dry, letting excess drain completely. In warm, bright conditions this may be weekly; reduce frequency in winter or low light. Avoid chronic sogginess, which promotes root rot, but do not allow the root ball to desiccate. Use a well-drained, chunky mix and a pot with generous drainage holes. Periodically flush the soil to leach accumulated salts, especially if using hard tap water.
Light
Provide abundant light. Outdoors, full sun to light shade; indoors, bright exposure with several hours of direct sun. South or west windows, sunrooms, or strong grow lights (approximately 10,000–20,000 lux for 6–8 hours daily) maintain compact growth and healthy leaf size. Insufficient light leads to legginess and leaf drop. Increase light gradually over 1–2 weeks when transitioning to prevent scorch. Rotate the plant periodically to promote balanced branching.
Nutrients
Feed during active growth (spring through early autumn) with a balanced, nitrogen-forward fertilizer (e.g., 3-1-2 ratio) at 1/4–1/2 strength every 4–6 weeks. Incorporate a slow-release granular in spring for steady supply, and supplement with iron or magnesium if leaves pale. Avoid fertilizing in winter or when stressed. Flush the pot monthly to prevent salt buildup, and always fertilize onto pre-moistened soil to protect roots.
Temperature
Provide warm, stable conditions: 18–30°C (65–86°F) is ideal. Avoid cold drafts and sustained temperatures below 12°C (54°F); brief dips near 10°C (50°F) can trigger leaf drop and setback. Outdoors, grow only in frost-free climates (approx. USDA Zones 10–12). A mild day–night differential (3–5°C) encourages sturdy growth. Indoors, keep away from heating vents and air conditioners that cause rapid humidity loss; pair warmth with moderate humidity for best aerial root development.
