Goeppertia warszewiczii, commonly sold as Calathea warszewiczii, is a striking tropical understory plant prized for its velvety, deep green leaves with feathery, light green midrib patterning and rich purple undersides. A clumping species from rhizomes, it forms an elegant rosette that typically reaches 45–90 cm tall and wide indoors. Like other members of Marantaceae, it exhibits nyctinasty—the leaves gently fold upward at night and relax by day. Its fine, suede-like texture and dramatic bicolor foliage make it a standout in low to medium, dappled light. In cultivation, it prefers evenly moist, airy media, warm temperatures, and elevated humidity. Sensitive to salts and minerals in water, it thrives with soft, filtered, or rainwater. With steady care, it produces new leaves regularly, each emerging tightly furled before unfurling to reveal the plush sheen. Though it doesn’t flower frequently indoors, the foliage is the main attraction. This species rewards attentive growers with lush, long-lived displays and is safe around pets and children.

How to care for Jungle Velvet
Water
Keep the substrate consistently, lightly moist. Water when the top 2–3 cm of mix feels dry, using lukewarm, low-mineral water. Apply slowly until excess drains; never leave the pot standing in runoff. In brighter conditions or warm, dry air, frequency increases; in low light or winter, reduce. Aim for even moisture through an airy mix rather than saturation. Periodically flush to remove salts, and avoid full drying or prolonged sogginess to prevent leaf crisping and root rot.
Light
Bright, indirect light is best—think dappled shade like a forest understory. Morning sun from an east window is fine; avoid harsh midday or afternoon sun that can bleach and crisp leaves. It tolerates lower light but grows slower with longer internodes. Use sheer curtains or place 0.5–2 m from a bright window. For grow lights, target gentle intensity (approx. 50–150 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹) for 10–12 h daily. Rotate the pot periodically for symmetrical growth.
Nutrients
Feed lightly during active growth (spring through early autumn) with a balanced, dilute (¼–½ strength) liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks. Choose urea-free, micronutrient-complete formulas and avoid high-salt products. Flush the potting mix with plain water monthly to prevent nutrient and mineral buildup. Pause fertilizing in winter or when light is low. Organic, slow, gentle nutrition (e.g., fish/seaweed emulsions) suits this species; always fertilize onto pre-moistened soil.
Temperature
Provide warm, stable conditions: ideal 18–27°C by day with a slight night dip. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, cold drafts, and rapid swings, which cause leaf curling, spotting, and slowed growth. Keep away from heaters and AC vents that desiccate foliage. If moving plants seasonally, acclimate gradually. In summer, it can go outdoors in shaded, humid spots above 18°C; bring indoors before nights cool. Consistency is key for pristine, velvety leaf texture.
