Carica papaya, commonly known as papaya, is a fast-growing, soft-wooded, short-lived tropical fruit tree native to southern Mexico and Central America. It typically reaches 3–8 m with a single, hollow, green to gray trunk marked by leaf scars. The crown carries large, deeply lobed leaves on long petioles, and the plant exudes a milky latex when cut. Plants are usually dioecious or polygamous, bearing separate male and female flowers, though some cultivars are hermaphroditic. The fruit is a large, elongated berry that ripens from green to yellow-orange, with sweet, salmon to orange flesh and central cavities filled with glossy black seeds. Papaya thrives in warm, frost-free climates, producing fruit within 6–12 months from seed under ideal conditions. It prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and consistent moisture, but is highly sensitive to cold, waterlogging, and strong winds. Beyond fresh eating, papaya is valued for papain-rich latex used as a meat tenderizer and in industry. Its rapid growth and high productivity make it a staple in tropical agroecosystems worldwide.

Water
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. In-ground plants need deep, infrequent irrigation that wets the root zone, then time to drain; water again when the top 3–5 cm of soil dries. Containers may require watering several times per week in hot, windy weather. Always ensure rapid drainage and avoid standing water around the trunk. Mulch helps retain moisture and reduce irrigation frequency. Reduce watering slightly during cool, overcast periods to prevent root diseases.
Light
Provide full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily; more sun generally increases yield and sweetness. Indoors or in greenhouses, aim for high light levels and supplement with strong LED grow lights if needed. Insufficient light leads to lanky growth, delayed flowering, and poor fruiting. In very hot, arid regions, light afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch and improve fruit quality. Maintain an open canopy by removing senescent leaves to improve light penetration and airflow.
Nutrients
Papaya is a heavy feeder. Incorporate well-aged compost at planting and apply frequent, light, balanced feedings during active growth. Use a nitrogen-forward fertilizer early (e.g., 10-5-10) to build canopy, then shift to higher potassium (e.g., 8-3-12) at flowering and fruiting for yield and flavor. Split applications every 4–6 weeks in the ground, or biweekly dilute liquid feeds in containers. Include magnesium and boron to prevent leaf chlorosis and misshapen fruit. Avoid salt build-up and never fertilize dry soil.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures are 22–32°C (72–90°F). Growth slows below ~15°C (59°F) and injury occurs near 10°C (50°F); light frost can kill foliage and freezing can be fatal. Sustained heat above 35°C (95°F) may reduce fruit set and cause sunscald; provide light afternoon shade and ample water during heat waves. Protect from cold winds and radiative cooling with row covers or proximity to warm walls. Papaya is strictly frost-free; overwinter indoors or in a heated greenhouse in temperate climates.
