Goeppertia ornata, formerly known as Calathea ornata, is a rhizomatous, evergreen understory plant native to the humid lowland forests of northern South America. Valued for its striking, dark green leaves etched with narrow pink to white pinstripes and deep purple undersides, it forms a dense clump about 30–60 cm tall. Like other prayer plants, its foliage exhibits nyctinasty, raising and lowering with the light cycle. In cultivation, it prefers consistently warm temperatures, high humidity, and gentle, filtered light, mimicking dappled forest shade. Leaves scorch in direct sun and curl or brown when humidity or moisture is inadequate. The species is sensitive to salts and hard water, requiring soft, filtered, or rainwater for best leaf edges. A loose, moisture-retentive yet airy potting mix supports steady growth. With attentive watering and avoidance of drafts, Goeppertia ornata rewards growers with lush, graphic foliage year-round. Clumps gradually expand from short rhizomes, and mature leaves can reach 15–25 cm long with elegantly tapered tips.

Water
Water when the top 1–1.5 inches (2–4 cm) of mix feels dry, then soak thoroughly until excess drains; empty the saucer. Maintain lightly moist soil in spring and summer, easing back in winter without allowing the root ball to dry completely. Use soft, low-mineral water to avoid leaf edge burn. If leaves curl, you’re likely underwatering or humidity is too low. Ensure drainage holes are clear; bottom-water occasionally to rehydrate a dry core.
Light
Provide bright, indirect light that mimics forest understory. An east window or bright north exposure is ideal; place 3–6 feet (1–2 m) from a sunny south/west window with a sheer curtain. Avoid direct midday sun, which bleaches pinstripes and burns edges. In dim conditions, growth slows and leaves shrink; supplement with a 4000–6500K LED grow light at 150–300 foot-candles (1,600–3,200 lux) for 10–12 hours daily.
Nutrients
Feed lightly during spring through early fall with a balanced, dilute fertilizer at 1/4–1/2 strength every 4–6 weeks. Calatheas are salt-sensitive; choose urea-free or organic formulas and avoid hard water when mixing. Do not fertilize in winter or when growth has stalled. Flush the pot thoroughly with plain water every 6–8 weeks to prevent salt buildup. At repotting, amend with composted bark and a small amount of worm castings for slow, gentle nutrition.
Temperature
Keep between 65–80°F (18–27°C) year-round; brief dips to 60°F (15.5°C) are tolerated, but growth stalls and damage may follow. Avoid cold drafts, sudden temperature swings, and hot, dry air from heaters or vents. In warm spells up to 85–90°F (29–32°C), increase humidity and air movement to prevent leaf stress. Outdoor placement is suitable only in frost-free tropical/subtropical zones; bring plants indoors well before nights drop below 65°F (18°C).
