Punica granatum, commonly known as pomegranate, is a long-lived, deciduous shrub or small tree native to the region from Iran to northern India and widely naturalized around the Mediterranean. It typically grows 3β5 m tall, with glossy, opposite to sub-opposite leaves and striking orange-red, tubular flowers that attract pollinators. The fruit is a leathery-skinned berry containing hundreds of jewel-like arils rich in juice and seeds. Pomegranate is adapted to semi-arid climates, tolerating heat, wind, and alkaline soils better than many fruit trees, yet it benefits from consistent moisture during flowering and fruit set. Most cultivars are self-fertile, though cross-pollination by bees can improve yield. In addition to its culinary value, it is prized ornamentally for its showy blossoms and attractive bark; dwarf and double-flowered selections are popular in containers and bonsai. Trees can bear within 2β3 years from planting and may live decades with minimal pruning, making them suitable for water-wise gardens and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

How to care for Pomegranate
Water
Pomegranates are drought-tolerant once established, but consistent moisture is crucial during flowering and fruit development. Water deeply, allowing the top 5β8 cm of soil to dry between irrigations. In hot, dry climates, in-ground trees often need a deep soak every 7β14 days; containers may need watering 1β2 times weekly depending on size and exposure. Use drip irrigation or a slow hose soak to wet the root zone thoroughly. Reduce watering in autumn and winter, avoiding waterlogged conditions that invite root rot.
Light
Provide full sun for best flowering and fruiting: at least 6β8 hours of direct light daily, ideally more in cooler climates. Light shade is tolerated but reduces yield and fruit color. Indoors or in greenhouses, place near a south-facing exposure and consider supplemental grow lights (12β14 hours) to maintain compact growth and encourage blooms. Ensure good air circulation to limit fungal disease, especially in humid climates, and rotate containers periodically for even canopy development.
Nutrients
Feed lightly but consistently. In-ground plants benefit from 2β3 light applications of a balanced or slightly high-potassium fertilizer from early spring to midsummer; avoid heavy nitrogen that drives leafy growth at the expense of flowers. For containers, use a balanced citrus/fruit-tree fertilizer at half strength monthly during active growth, plus a top-dress of compost in spring. Maintain soil pH near neutral and supply micronutrients (especially iron) if grown in high-pH soils. Stop fertilizing 6β8 weeks before first frost.
Temperature
Optimal growth occurs between 65β95Β°F (18β35Β°C). Established trees can tolerate brief cold to about 12β15Β°F (-11 to -9Β°C), though young shoots and flower buds are damaged below 28Β°F (-2Β°C). In colder regions, grow in containers and overwinter above 40Β°F (4β5Β°C) in a bright, cool space. Heat-tolerant and well-suited to Mediterranean and semi-arid climates, but prolonged hard freezes can kill top growth. Provide wind protection in exposed sites to reduce blossom drop and fruit scarring.
