About Sago Palm

Cycas revoluta, commonly known as the Sago Palm, is not a true palm but a species of gymnosperm in the Cycadaceae family, which dates back millions of years. This slow-growing plant features a rugged trunk topped with stiff, feathery leaves that are dark green in color. It is a popular ornamental plant due to its exotic and tropical appearance. Despite its name, it is native to the southern parts of Japan, especially the Ryukyu Islands. It is quite hardy once established and can survive for centuries in the right conditions. However, all parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.

How to care for Sago Palm

Water

Water the Sago Palm deeply but infrequently, allowing the topsoil to dry out completely between waterings. During the active growth period in spring and summer, water the plant approximately once a week depending on the climate and environmental conditions. Reduce watering during the winter months.

Light

The Sago Palm prefers bright, indirect sunlight. It can adapt to partial shade, but its growth may slow. Limited exposure to direct sunlight is tolerable but can lead to leaf burn if not gradually acclimated or exposed during cooler parts of the day.

Nutrients

Fertilize Cycas revoluta during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every two to three months. Avoid over-fertilizing as this can cause damage to the plant’s roots. Ideally, use a palm-specific fertilizer that includes micro-nutrients to promote healthy growth and leaf production.
