Guzmania lingulata, commonly known as the Scarlet Star, is a vibrant tropical plant favored for its striking red floral bracts and lush green foliage. Originating from the rainforests of Central and South America, it thrives under warm and humid conditions. This epiphytic plant typically grows without soil, anchoring itself to trees. The center of the plant forms a water-holding 'tank' made from a rosette of leaves, which collects rainwater and debris to nourish itself. How to care for Scarlet Star
Water
Water by filling the central 'tank' of the plant, allowing it to slowly absorb moisture through its leaves. Empty the tank every few weeks to prevent stagnant water and refresh with clean water. Additional misting will help maintain the necessary humidity.
Light
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. If natural light is insufficient, fluorescent or grow lights can provide adequate illumination.
Nutrients
Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to a quarter of the recommended strength, applied monthly during the growing season. Avoid applying fertilizer directly into the center cup as it can lead to rot.
Temperature
Guzmania lingulata prefers warm temperatures typical of tropical environments, ideally between 18°C to 27°C (64°F to 80°F). Protect from temperatures dropping below 15°C (59°F) to avoid stress and potential damage.
