Pleomele, Dracaena reflexa
Dracaena reflexa, commonly known as Song of India, is a tropical shrub characterized by its glossy green leaves, which are arranged in a spiral pattern and often variegated with yellow or light green. Typically growing up to 6 feet indoors, this plant is admired for its ornamental value and low-maintenance attributes. In its natural habitat, it can reach up to 15 feet. The narrow leaves and slow growth make it an ideal choice for indoor settings. Dracaena reflexa thrives under indirect sunlight and requires well-draining soil. It’s not only popular for home and office environments but also recognized for its air-purifying qualities.
Water your Dracaena reflexa thoroughly, allowing water to drain out of the pot's bottom. Ensure the top inch of soil dries out before the next watering. During winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant's growth slows down. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water as it can cause root rot.
Position your Dracaena reflexa in a location with bright, indirect light. A north-facing window or a few feet removed from a south or west-facing window is ideal. Direct sunlight can lead to leaf scorch, so be cautious with exposure.
Feed Dracaena reflexa with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength every month during the growing season (spring and summer). In fall and winter, reduce feeding to once every other month. Avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to salt accumulation in the soil and may cause leaf burn.
Dracaena reflexa prefers temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) to prevent stress and leaf damage. Keep the plant away from cold drafts, such as those from air conditioners or open windows in cooler climates.
