Prunus avium, commonly known as sweet cherry, is a deciduous tree in the rose family (Rosaceae) native to Europe and western Asia. Reaching 15–30 m tall with a broad, oval crown, it bears glossy, reddish-brown bark marked by horizontal lenticels and elliptic, serrated leaves that color yellow to orange-red in autumn. In mid-spring, it produces profuse clusters (umbels) of fragrant, five-petaled white blossoms that are highly attractive to pollinators. The glossy drupes ripen from red to deep mahogany, with firm, sweet flesh prized for fresh eating and processing. Most cultivars are self-incompatible and require a compatible pollinizer and active bees for reliable fruit set, though some self-fertile types exist. It prefers deep, well-drained loams, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and sites with good air circulation. Sweet cherry requires substantial winter chill and is sensitive to late frosts during bloom. It is susceptible to brown rot, bacterial canker, and cherry leaf spot, and fruits are highly attractive to birds, which can significantly reduce yields without protection.

How to care for Sweet cherry
Water
Provide consistent, deep moisture from bloom through fruit swell. Aim for roughly 25–40 mm of water per week (rain plus irrigation) in dry periods, delivered via drip or soaker lines to keep foliage dry. Allow the top 5–8 cm of soil to partially dry between irrigations, but avoid waterlogging—sweet cherry is intolerant of poor drainage. Reduce irrigation after harvest to harden new growth, and avoid late-season excess that can promote fruit cracking and disease. Container trees dry faster and need more frequent checks.
Light
Full sun is essential for flowering, fruit quality, and disease resistance—provide at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily. While trees tolerate very light, temporary shade, sustained shade reduces bloom and increases fungal pressure. Choose an open site with good air movement to dry foliage quickly after dew or rain. In regions with intense summer sun, reflective mulches or light canopy management can optimize light distribution while limiting fruit sunburn on exposed clusters.
Nutrients
Test soil before fertilizing and correct pH first. Young trees benefit from light nitrogen in early spring (e.g., balanced 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 at modest rates) and a top-dress of compost or well-rotted manure. Avoid high nitrogen after midsummer to prevent tender growth and winter injury. Maintain adequate potassium and phosphorus for flowering and fruit quality; apply sulfate of potash if K is low. In calcareous soils, watch for iron chlorosis. Mulch 5–8 cm to conserve moisture and feed soil biology.
Temperature
Hardy in USDA Zones 5–7 (to 8 in favorable climates). Requires substantial winter chill, typically 700–1,000 hours below about 7°C, for reliable flowering. Blossoms are frost-sensitive; protect from late spring frosts with site selection (slopes, good air drainage) or frost protection when possible. Mature trees tolerate about −23 to −26°C, depending on cultivar and rootstock. Prolonged heat above 35°C can cause sunburn and soft fruit; use white trunk paint or shade netting in hot, high-radiation sites.
