Castanea sativa is a long-lived, fast-growing deciduous tree prized for its edible nuts and durable timber. Reaching 20–35 m tall with a broad, domed crown, it bears glossy, lanceolate leaves with sharply serrated margins that turn golden in autumn. The species is monoecious: showy, fragrant male catkins appear in early to midsummer, with inconspicuous female flowers at their bases that mature into prickly green burrs (cupules) splitting to reveal 1–3 shiny brown nuts. Native to southern Europe and Asia Minor, it thrives on deep, well-drained, acidic to slightly acidic soils and dislikes chalk or waterlogging. It benefits from warm summers for nut ripening and is hardy through cold winters, though late spring frosts can damage young shoots and flowers. Sweet chestnut has been traditionally coppiced and cultivated in extensive groves; notable pests and diseases include chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica), ink disease (Phytophthora spp.), and chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus). Many grafted cultivars exist for improved nut size, flavor, and blight tolerance.

Water
Water deeply and infrequently to encourage a deep root system, especially during the first 2–3 growing seasons. Provide roughly 25–40 mm (1–1.5 inches) of water per week in dry spells, delivered in one or two soakings. Keep the root zone evenly moist but never waterlogged; sweet chestnut is sensitive to poor drainage. A wide mulch ring helps reduce evaporation and moderates soil temperature. Mature, established trees usually need supplemental water only during prolonged drought and during nut fill in mid to late summer.
Light
Full sun is best for vigorous growth, flowering, and nut production—aim for 6–8+ hours of direct light daily. Light partial shade is tolerated, especially in cooler or wind-exposed sites, but yield and nut quality typically decline with increasing shade. Avoid deep shade from nearby trees or structures. In very hot, arid regions, minimal afternoon shade for young trees can reduce leaf scorch, provided overall light remains high.
Nutrients
Prioritize soil health over heavy feeding. Incorporate well-rotted compost or leaf mold in spring and maintain a 5–8 cm organic mulch to conserve moisture and feed soil biota. Use a light application of a balanced, slow-release, low-chloride fertilizer (e.g., NPK around 5-3-8) in early spring, emphasizing potassium for nut set. Avoid high pH inputs (lime) to prevent iron chlorosis; target pH 5–6.5. Where deficiencies occur, apply chelated iron or micronutrients as foliar sprays. Always base inputs on soil tests.
Temperature
Hardy in roughly USDA zones 5–9. Dormant wood tolerates substantial cold, but late spring frosts can damage new growth and flowers; avoid frost pockets. Warm summers (ideally many days between 20–30°C) are needed for reliable nut ripening, though excessive heat with drought stress (>35–38°C) can impair kernel fill. Provide a wind-sheltered site in colder regions. In Mediterranean climates, ensure irrigation during extended summer drought to prevent stress-related susceptibility to pests and diseases.
