Dianthus barbatus, commonly called Sweet William, is a biennial or short‑lived perennial valued for dense, flat-topped clusters of clove-scented blooms in late spring to early summer. Plants form a low rosette of narrow, blue-green leaves the first year, then send up sturdy, often square stems 30–60 cm tall in the second year. The 1.5–3 cm flowers, with finely serrated or fringed petals, span a wide palette—white, shell pink, rose, carmine, magenta, burgundy, and purple—often bicolored with a contrasting eye or picotee edging. Sweet William thrives in well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soils and appreciates cooler summer conditions. It’s a classic for cottage borders, edging, cutting gardens, and containers. Regular deadheading prolongs bloom, and plants may lightly self-seed to persist. Attractive to bees and butterflies, it’s also long-lasting in the vase. In warm climates or as a bedding plant, it’s often grown as an annual; in cooler regions, it’s reliably biennial and may overwinter with minimal protection.

How to care for Sweet William
Water
Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry between waterings. Aim for consistent moisture during establishment and bud formation, but avoid waterlogging, which predisposes crowns to rot. Morning watering keeps foliage dry by nightfall and reduces disease. In containers, check more often—pots dry faster in sun and wind. A thin, light-colored mulch helps moderate moisture and soil temperature, but keep mulch pulled back from the crown.
Light
Provide full sun for 6–8+ hours daily to maximize compact growth, color saturation, and flower count. In hot-summer regions, light afternoon shade (especially 2–4 pm) reduces heat stress and extends bloom. Too much shade leads to lanky growth, fewer flowers, and greater disease pressure. For containers, choose a bright, open exposure and rotate pots weekly for even growth. Indoors is generally unsuitable long-term; these plants perform best outdoors in high light.
Nutrients
Mix in compost and a small amount of garden lime at planting to achieve a slightly alkaline, fertile but free-draining bed. In spring of the flowering year, apply a balanced, low-nitrogen, bloom-leaning fertilizer (e.g., 5-10-10) at half to three-quarter strength. Repeat light feedings every 4–6 weeks through peak bloom. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which promotes lush foliage at the expense of flowers and can increase disease. Container plants benefit from a slow-release prill plus occasional dilute liquid feed.
Temperature
Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9. Ideal growth and flowering occur with cool to mild conditions, about 50–70°F (10–21°C). Plants tolerate light frosts and overwinter well with good drainage; saturated winter soils are more damaging than cold. Prolonged heat above ~85°F (29°C) can shorten bloom and stress plants—provide afternoon shade, extra airflow, and consistent moisture in hot climates. Mulch lightly in cold regions after the ground freezes to buffer freeze–thaw cycles.
