About Turtle Vine

Callisia repens, commonly called Turtle Vine, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial in the spiderwort family (Commelinaceae). It creeps on slender stems that root at the nodes, quickly forming dense cascades ideal for hanging baskets or as a small-scale groundcover in warm climates. Leaves are tiny, fleshy, and opposite; typically glossy green above with purple undersides when grown in brighter light. Small, three-petaled white flowers can appear intermittently, though the plant is chiefly valued for its vigorous foliage. Indoors it is forgiving, compact with regular pinching, and exceptionally easy to propagate—cuttings root within days in water or a light potting mix. Provide a freely draining medium and allow brief dry-downs between thorough waterings to avoid rot. In frost-free regions it can escape cultivation and become weedy, so confine it to containers and dispose of trimmings responsibly. With bright, indirect light, moderate humidity, and good airflow, Callisia repens remains lush, tidy, and colorful year-round.

How to care for Turtle Vine

Water

Water thoroughly until excess drains, then allow the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of the mix to dry before watering again. In bright, warm conditions this may be every 4–7 days; in lower light or cool rooms, stretch to 7–14 days. Bottom-watering helps keep foliage dry, but always drain well. Avoid prolonged saturation and never let the pot sit in water. Reduce watering noticeably in winter or after heavy pruning.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light for compact growth and good color. A few hours of gentle morning sun are beneficial; avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the small leaves. In lower light it survives but becomes leggy and greener with wider spacing between nodes. Variegated cultivars need extra brightness to maintain patterning. Supplement with LED grow lights (10–12 hours/day) if windows are limited.

Nutrients

Feed lightly during active growth (spring through early fall). Use a balanced, water‑soluble fertilizer at 1/4–1/2 strength every 4–6 weeks, or apply a gentle organic liquid on the same schedule. Flush the pot with plain water every 2–3 months to prevent salt buildup, which can burn leaf tips. Do not fertilize in winter or when light is very low, and avoid heavy, slow‑release pellets in small pots.

Temperature

Keep in a warm room: 18–27°C (65–80°F) is ideal. Brief dips to 10–12°C (50–54°F) are tolerated, but growth slows and leaf loss can occur; aim to stay above 15°C (59°F) for best vigor. Protect from drafts, sudden temperature swings, and cold windows. Outdoors, grow only in frost-free climates and shelter from heavy rain during cool spells to prevent stem and root rot.
