About Umbrella tree

Heptapleurum actinophyllum (syn. Schefflera actinophylla), commonly called the umbrella tree, is a fast-growing evergreen from the rainforests of northern Australia and New Guinea. Indoors it is prized for shiny, palmately compound leaves with 7–16 radiating leaflets that form a distinct umbrella-like whorl. New foliage may flush bronze before maturing deep green. In frost-free climates outdoors, it can develop into a multi-stemmed tree 10–15 m tall, bearing dramatic red, many-racemed inflorescences that resemble an octopus. As a houseplant it typically reaches 1–3 m and responds well to bright, filtered light, moderate humidity, and regular pruning to maintain shape. Use a coarse, well-draining mix and a sturdy container, as roots are vigorous. The sap contains calcium oxalate, so handle with care. In suitable climates it can self-seed and is invasive; grow responsibly and prevent escape beyond gardens.

How to care for Umbrella tree

Water

Water when the top 2–4 cm (1–1.5 in) of the potting mix feels dry. Soak thoroughly until excess drains, then empty the saucer to prevent root rot. In brighter, warmer conditions, expect to water more frequently; in winter or low light, let the soil dry a bit further between waterings. Use room‑temperature water and periodically flush the mix to remove accumulated salts. Consistent moisture is best, but never keep the root zone waterlogged.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light or filtered sun; a few hours of gentle morning sun are beneficial. Avoid harsh midday sun behind hot glass, which can scorch leaves, and avoid deep shade, which leads to legginess and leaf drop. Outdoors in the tropics, it thrives in dappled understory light. If moving to brighter light, acclimate over 1–2 weeks to prevent shock. Variegated cultivars require slightly more light.

Nutrients

Feed during active growth (spring through early autumn) with a balanced, water‑soluble fertilizer (e.g., 10‑10‑10 or 20‑20‑20) diluted to half strength every 4–6 weeks. Alternatively, apply a slow‑release, balanced granular fertilizer at label rates in spring. Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter when growth slows. Flush the potting mix every 2–3 months to prevent salt buildup, and avoid high‑phosphorus formulas that can promote weak, leggy growth under low light.

Temperature

Keep between 18–29°C (65–85°F) for best growth. Avoid temperatures below 10–12°C (50–54°F), which can cause leaf drop and cold damage. Protect from drafts, heat vents, and sudden temperature swings. In warm seasons, the plant can summer outdoors in shaded, wind‑sheltered sites if nights stay above 15°C (59°F); acclimate gradually and bring indoors well before cool weather returns.
