Aechmea fasciata, commonly called the Silver Vase or Urn Plant, is a striking bromeliad native to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. It forms a tight rosette of broad, arching leaves banded in silvery gray, creating a sculptural, vase-like reservoir at the center. Mature plants produce a long-lasting, blush-pink inflorescence bristling with showy bracts and small blue-to-lavender flowers that can persist for months. Like many bromeliads, it is epiphytic in nature and thrives with excellent drainage, bright filtered light, moderate humidity, and good air movement. The rosette functions as a “tank” that collects rain and nutrients. After blooming, the mother plant gradually declines while producing offsets (pups) around its base, which can be separated and grown on. Aechmea fasciata adapts well to indoor conditions, tolerating household humidity better than many tropicals, provided its central cup is kept fresh and the potting mix is never soggy. Its architectural form, modest care requirements, and impressive bloom make it a favorite for homes, conservatories, and shaded patios.

How to care for Urn Plant
Water
Keep the central rosette (“urn”) one-third to two-thirds full with fresh, non-chlorinated water; empty, rinse, and refill weekly to prevent stagnation and salts. Water the potting mix thoroughly, then allow the top inch to dry before repeating; never leave the pot in standing water. Reduce frequency during cool, low-light periods. In prolonged cool spells, keep the cup barely filled or dry to limit rot risk. Use rain, distilled, or soft water in hard-water areas.
Light
Provide bright, filtered light: an east window, gentle morning sun, or bright shade behind sheer curtains. Avoid harsh midday sun, which scorches leaves; too little light causes elongated growth, weak silver banding, and reluctance to bloom. A bright south or west exposure works if the plant is set back from the glass or lightly shaded. It adapts well to strong artificial light for 12–14 hours daily.
Nutrients
Feed sparingly during spring and summer with a balanced, urea-free fertilizer at 1/4–1/2 strength every 4–6 weeks. Apply as a light foliar spray or drench the potting mix; avoid routinely filling the central cup with fertilizer to prevent salt burn. Flush the tank with plain water monthly to remove residues. Do not fertilize in winter or when growth is slow. Excess nutrients can reduce silver banding and may distort bloom quality.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures are 65–80°F (18–27°C) by day with nights 55–65°F (13–18°C). Brief dips to 50°F (10°C) are tolerated, but sustained cold damages foliage and encourages rot; avoid frost. Provide good air movement and avoid hot, dry drafts. In heat above 88–90°F (31–32°C), increase humidity, refresh the tank more often, and shade lightly to keep the plant comfortable. Do not place directly against cold windows in winter.
