Trifolium repens, commonly known as white clover, is a low-growing, stoloniferous perennial legume widely used as forage and as a resilient lawn alternative. Its creeping stems root at nodes, forming dense mats 5–20 cm tall that suppress weeds and stabilize soil. The trifoliate leaves often display a pale chevron, and rounded heads bear dozens of small white flowers that may blush pink with age, attracting bees and other pollinators. As a nitrogen fixer, it forms symbioses with Rhizobium bacteria, enriching soil fertility and reducing the need for synthetic nitrogen inputs. Native to Europe and parts of western and central Asia, it is now naturalized across most temperate regions. It tolerates mowing and light foot traffic, thrives in cool, moist conditions, and remains green in mild winters. With adequate moisture and sun, it spreads steadily; in some settings it can be weedy, so edging or containment in beds or pots may be prudent.

How to care for White clover
Water
Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and in drying winds. Provide about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water per week from rain or irrigation, adjusting for sandier soils that drain quickly. Water deeply but less frequently to encourage broader rooting; allow the top 1–2 cm to dry between irrigations. In containers, water when the top 2–3 cm feel dry and ensure sharp drainage—soggy conditions invite root rot and reduce nodulation efficiency.
Light
Full sun to partial shade. Aim for 4–6+ hours of direct sun daily for dense growth and flowering; in hot summers, provide light afternoon shade to limit stress and maintain color. In bright shade it will persist but grow looser and flower less. If grown in containers or indoors, place in the brightest location available (south or west exposure) and consider 12–14 hours of full-spectrum LED supplement if natural light is insufficient.
Nutrients
As a legume, white clover supplies much of its own nitrogen via root nodules, so avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that suppress nodulation. At establishment, incorporate compost and, in low-phosphorus soils, a balanced low-N product emphasizing phosphorus and potassium (e.g., 3-4-6). Inoculate seed with the appropriate Rhizobium trifolii inoculant if sowing into soils lacking clover history. Feed lightly in early spring if growth is pale, and correct micronutrient deficiencies only per soil test.
Temperature
White clover grows best in cool to mild temperatures, about 10–24°C (50–75°F), and slows markedly above 30°C (86°F). Established plants are winter-hardy to at least −30°C (−22°F) when crowns are insulated by soil or snow. In prolonged heat or drought it may go semi-dormant, recovering with cooler, wetter weather. For containers, aim for 5–30°C (41–86°F) and shield from desiccating winds or reflective heat. Avoid sustained soil temperatures above 32°C, which weaken roots and nodulation.
