  • Himalayan balsam

    Impatiens glandulifera, commonly called Himalayan balsam, is a fast-growing annual from the western Himalayas that thrives along moist, nutrient-rich banks and woodland edges. It forms hollow, reddish, succulent stems up to 2–3 m tall, with opposite lanceolate leaves and showy pink to magenta, helmet-shaped flowers from midsummer to autumn. The explosive seed pods catapult seeds several meters, aiding rapid colonization. While attractive and easy to grow in containers or controlled beds, it is highly invasive in many temperate regions, where it outcompetes native flora and alters riparian habitats. In cultivation, it prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soil and cool to mild conditions, and it can tolerate partial shade. As an annual, it completes its life cycle in one season and dies with frost. Non-toxic but potentially allergenic sap may irritate sensitive skin, and dense stands can harbor moisture-loving pests. Responsible growers should prevent seeding and comply with local regulations restricting planting and transport.

  • Orange hawkweed

    Pilosella aurantiaca (syn. Hieracium aurantiacum), commonly called orange hawkweed, is a stoloniferous perennial in the daisy family prized for its vivid orange to brick-red flower heads. It forms low, hairy basal rosettes of lanceolate leaves that exude a milky latex when cut. Leafy scapes rise 15–60 cm, bearing clusters of composite blooms in late spring to midsummer that attract bees and butterflies. Adapted to open, well-drained, low-fertility sites, it excels in sunny meadows, embankments, and disturbed ground. The plant spreads aggressively via above-ground stolons and abundant wind-dispersed seeds, allowing rapid colonization where conditions suit. While ornamental in controlled plantings, it is invasive in many regions and can outcompete native flora, especially on nutrient-poor soils. In cultivation, it is drought tolerant once established and requires minimal care, but benefits from containment strategies such as pots or edging. Its intense color and long flowering make it a striking feature, provided spread is actively managed through deadheading and removal of runners.

  • Annual fleabane

    Erigeron annuus, commonly called annual fleabane, is a North American native wildflower in the aster family bearing airy sprays of small, daisy-like blossoms. Plants typically reach 30–100 cm tall with branching, hairy stems and alternate leaves; basal leaves are larger and spoon- to lance-shaped, while upper leaves are narrower and often sessile. Numerous flower heads, about 1–2 cm across, feature many fine, threadlike white rays that may age pink or lavender, surrounding a golden-yellow disc. Blooming from late spring through fall, it provides a long nectar window for bees, hoverflies, and small butterflies. It thrives in full sun to light shade and in a wide range of soils, often colonizing disturbed sites. Although usually annual, it may behave as a short-lived biennial, forming a rosette the first year and flowering the next. Prolific wind-borne seeds lead to self-sowing, making it a useful, low-input meadow species but potentially weedy where unmanaged.

  • Germander speedwell

    Veronica chamaedrys, commonly called germander speedwell, is a low, mat-forming perennial of the plantain family (Plantaginaceae) valued for its vivid sky-blue, white-eyed flowers. Typically 10–30 cm tall, it spreads by slender creeping stems that root at nodes, forming tidy patches in meadows, lawns, and woodland edges. Opposite, serrated, oval leaves clothe softly hairy stems, while spring to early-summer racemes carry four-lobed, veined blossoms that are highly attractive to solitary bees, hoverflies, and small pollinators. Adaptable and undemanding, it thrives in moderately fertile, well-drained loam, chalk, or sandy soils with consistent moisture, yet tolerates short dry spells once established. It is fully hardy in temperate climates and can remain semi-evergreen in mild winters. In gardens it serves as a graceful groundcover between stepping stones, in naturalistic plantings, and beneath open shrubs, though it may lightly self-seed. Historically used as a country medicinal herb, today it is chiefly grown for its cheerful carpets of blue in spring.

  • Woodland sage

    Salvia nemorosa, commonly called woodland sage or Balkan clary, is a hardy, clump-forming perennial prized for long-lasting spires of purple, violet, or blue flowers held above aromatic, textured foliage. Native to Central and Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it thrives in lean, well-drained soils and sunny sites. Flowering typically begins in late spring and can repeat through summer with prompt deadheading or shearing after the first flush. Plants form tidy mounds with sturdy, square stems and attract a wealth of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and beneficial hoverflies, while being notably deer- and rabbit-resistant. Numerous cultivars offer varied heights and flower colors, making it versatile for borders, cottage gardens, prairie plantings, and containers. Drought-tolerant once established, S. nemorosa is low maintenance, resistant to most pests and diseases when kept dry at the foliage, and tolerant of cold winters. Its architecture combines well with ornamental grasses, yarrows, and coneflowers, providing prolonged seasonal interest and reliable performance in temperate climates.

  • Dotted loosestrife

    Lysimachia punctata, commonly called dotted loosestrife, is a vigorous, rhizomatous herbaceous perennial in the primrose family (Primulaceae). It forms upright clumps 60–100 cm tall with stiff, hairy stems and medium-green leaves arranged opposite or in whorls of three. In early to mid-summer, axillary clusters of five-petaled, starry yellow flowers line the stems, each bloom often marked with orange-brown speckles at the base—hence the species name punctata. The flowers are subtended by leafy bracts, creating a dense, spire-like display attractive to bees and other pollinators. It spreads steadily via short rhizomes and self-seeding in favorable sites, making a reliable colonizer for borders, naturalistic plantings, and damp meadow gardens. Best performance occurs in moisture-retentive, fertile soils with full sun to light shade. Though not invasive in most gardens, it can become assertive; periodic division helps manage its footprint and rejuvenate clumps. Foliage dies back in winter and re-emerges in spring.

  • Star of Persia

    Allium cristophii, commonly called Star of Persia, is a bulbous perennial ornamental onion celebrated for its spectacular, spherical flower heads up to 20–25 cm (8–10 in) across. Each globe is composed of dozens of metallic-lilac, star-shaped florets that shimmer in sunlight, attracting bees and other pollinators in late spring to early summer. Plants reach about 45–60 cm (18–24 in) tall, with broad, gray-green basal leaves that typically wither by the time the flowers open—a natural adaptation that emphasizes the dramatic blooms. The seed heads dry into architectural orbs that persist for weeks and are prized in dried arrangements. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–8, it thrives in full sun and sharply drained, sandy or gritty soils, ideally neutral to alkaline. Bulbs are planted in autumn, 10–15 cm (4–6 in) deep and 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart. Suited to rock gardens, gravel plantings, sunny borders, and containers, it performs best with dry summers and avoids winter wet. Recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

  • Ninebark

    Physocarpus opulifolius, commonly called ninebark, is a hardy, deciduous shrub in the rose family valued for four-season interest and exceptional adaptability. Typically 5–10 ft (1.5–3 m) tall and wide, it forms an arching, fountain-like habit. The species bears lobed, maple-like leaves that range from green to burgundy in cultivars, turning yellow, orange, or red in fall. In late spring to early summer, rounded clusters of small white to pink-tinged flowers attract pollinators, followed by reddish to brown, papery seed capsules that persist for additional texture. Its signature exfoliating bark peels in thin layers, revealing cinnamon to tan inner bark—an ornamental highlight in winter and the source of the common name. Native to North America, ninebark tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and gravel, and is drought-tolerant once established. It thrives in full sun to part shade, with best foliage color and flowering in sunnier sites. Pruning is straightforward: remove oldest canes after bloom to maintain vigor.

  • Indian pokeweed

    Phytolacca acinosa, commonly called Indian pokeweed, is a robust, herbaceous perennial native to the Himalayas and much of temperate China. It forms upright clumps 1–2 m tall with thick, often reddish, succulent stems and large, ovate leaves. In late spring to summer it produces erect, bottlebrush-like racemes of small white to greenish flowers that mature into glossy, deep purple-black berries. The showy fruit clusters attract birds, which readily disperse the seeds. All parts of the plant—especially roots and seeds—are toxic if ingested, and sap may irritate skin; gloves are recommended when handling. It thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soils and tolerates full sun to partial shade, showing best flowering and fruiting in brighter sites with adequate moisture. The species can self-sow and naturalize readily, so deadheading before berries ripen helps prevent unwanted spread. Though striking in informal borders or naturalistic plantings, it is best sited away from edible gardens, play areas, and livestock access due to its toxicity and vigorous growth.

  • Purple loosestrife

    Lythrum salicaria, commonly called purple loosestrife, is a hardy, herbaceous perennial native to Europe and western/central Asia, now widely naturalized and invasive in parts of North America and New Zealand. It forms dense, multi-stemmed clumps 1–2 m tall with square, often reddish stems and opposite to whorled, lanceolate leaves reminiscent of willow foliage. Showy, upright spikes of magenta to purple, five- to six-petaled flowers appear from mid to late summer and are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Each plant can produce vast quantities of tiny seeds held in capsules, enabling rapid spread, especially in wetlands. While striking in cultivation, it displaces native wetland vegetation and alters habitat structure where invasive. In managed gardens and controlled water gardens, it tolerates a range of soils but prefers consistently wet, rich, loamy substrates. It is best reserved for contained settings and is regulated or banned in many regions; consider non-invasive native alternatives where appropriate.
