Great willowherb
Epilobium hirsutum, commonly called great willowherb, is a vigorous, rhizomatous perennial in the evening-primrose family (Onagraceae). It forms tall, upright clumps 1–2 m high with softly hairy, often reddish stems and sessile, lanceolate leaves with serrated margins arranged opposite or in loose whorls. From mid- to late summer it carries showy, rose-pink to magenta flowers, each with four deeply notched petals and a pale center, followed by long, slender seed capsules that split to release numerous silky-plumed seeds dispersed by wind. Native across much of Europe, western and central Asia, and North Africa, it thrives in damp, nutrient-rich soils along watercourses and disturbed wet ground, and has naturalized in parts of North America and New Zealand. The species is valued by pollinators, attracting bees and hoverflies, but can spread assertively via both seed and creeping rhizomes. In gardens it suits wildlife and wetland plantings, where its moisture-loving nature and striking floral displays can be showcased.

Goat willow
Salix caprea, commonly known as goat willow or pussy willow, is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous shrub or small tree native to Europe and western Asia. It typically reaches 5–10 m tall, forming a broad, rounded crown with gray-brown, fissured bark. Leaves are ovate, dark green above and softly downy beneath, giving a slightly silvery underside. Dioecious plants produce showy, silky catkins in late winter to early spring before the leaves emerge; male catkins are the iconic silver “pussy willows” that turn golden with pollen. Exceptionally tolerant of heavy, damp soils and even periodic waterlogging, S. caprea thrives along streams, wetlands, and hedgerows, and responds well to coppicing or pollarding. It is ecologically valuable, supplying early nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators and serving as a host for numerous insects. Easily propagated from hardwood cuttings, it is used in wildlife gardens, rain gardens, erosion control, and as ornamental catkin displays, including weeping forms such as ‘Kilmarnock’.

Nipplewort
Lapsana communis, commonly called nipplewort, is a fast-growing annual to short-lived biennial in the Asteraceae. While most often encountered as a wild plant or weed, it can be cultivated intentionally for greens, especially in cool, moist conditions.
