  • Pink calla lily

    Zantedeschia rehmannii is a summer-growing, tuberous aroid native to the summer-rainfall grasslands of northeastern South Africa and Eswatini. Commonly called the pink calla lily, it forms clumps of slender, lanceolate leaves and elegant, funnel-shaped spathes in shades of rose to deep magenta surrounding a yellow spadix. Plants typically reach 20–45 cm tall, making them well suited to containers and borders. Unlike the evergreen Z. aethiopica, this species has a pronounced dormant season: foliage senesces after flowering and the tubers rest until conditions warm again. In nature it occurs on well-drained, often rocky slopes that are moist in the growing season and dry in winter, a pattern that guides cultivation. Provide an airy, humus-rich medium that drains freely, steady moisture during active growth, and a dry rest once leaves yellow. With bright, filtered light and moderate temperatures, Z. rehmannii rewards growers with long-lasting blooms that also make excellent cut flowers.

  • Indian banyan

    Ficus benghalensis, the Indian banyan, is a massive evergreen fig native to the Indian subcontinent. In nature it begins life as an epiphyte, sending down aerial prop roots that thicken into pillar-like trunks, eventually forming vast, multi-stemmed groves with a broad, shady canopy. Mature trees can spread over hectares and live for centuries, playing key ecological and cultural roles as keystone fruiting trees and sacred village landmarks. Leaves are large, leathery, and elliptical, with prominent veins and milky latex in the tissues. Tiny syconia (fig fruits) are pollinated by species-specific fig wasps. In containers, banyans remain far smaller yet still produce characteristic aerial roots under warm, humid, bright conditions. They prefer freely draining, slightly acidic media and steady warmth. While robust and drought-tolerant once established outdoors in frost-free climates, indoor specimens appreciate consistent moisture, high light, and periodic pruning to manage size and encourage branching. Outdoors, expansive roots can disrupt paving and foundations, so situate well away from structures.

  • Sweet cherry

    Prunus avium, commonly known as sweet cherry, is a deciduous tree in the rose family (Rosaceae) native to Europe and western Asia. Reaching 15–30 m tall with a broad, oval crown, it bears glossy, reddish-brown bark marked by horizontal lenticels and elliptic, serrated leaves that color yellow to orange-red in autumn. In mid-spring, it produces profuse clusters (umbels) of fragrant, five-petaled white blossoms that are highly attractive to pollinators. The glossy drupes ripen from red to deep mahogany, with firm, sweet flesh prized for fresh eating and processing. Most cultivars are self-incompatible and require a compatible pollinizer and active bees for reliable fruit set, though some self-fertile types exist. It prefers deep, well-drained loams, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and sites with good air circulation. Sweet cherry requires substantial winter chill and is sensitive to late frosts during bloom. It is susceptible to brown rot, bacterial canker, and cherry leaf spot, and fruits are highly attractive to birds, which can significantly reduce yields without protection.

  • Boston ivy

    Parthenocissus tricuspidata, commonly called Boston ivy, is a vigorous, deciduous climbing vine in the grape family (Vitaceae), native to East Asia. Its distinctive, glossy, three-lobed leaves emerge bright green, deepen through summer, and blaze scarlet, crimson, or burgundy in fall, creating iconic seasonal displays on walls and trellises. Unlike true ivies, it climbs by tendrils tipped with adhesive disks that latch onto masonry, wood, or bark without penetrating. Small greenish flowers in late spring to early summer give way to blue-black berries relished by birds. Mature vines can reach 30–50 ft (9–15 m) and spread widely, forming dense coverage that can shade buildings and reduce heat gain. It tolerates urban conditions, various soils, and moderate drought once established. While generally gentle on sound masonry, it can lift loose shingles, enter crevices, and leave persistent holdfast marks, so placement and maintenance matter. Do not confuse with Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), which has five leaflets rather than a single three-lobed blade.

  • Sweet alyssum

    Lobularia maritima, commonly called sweet alyssum, is a low-growing, mat-forming member of the mustard family (Brassicaceae) prized for its clouds of tiny, honey-scented flowers that attract bees, hoverflies, and butterflies. Native to the Mediterranean and nearby Atlantic islands, it thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and tolerates salt spray, wind, and drought once established. Plants typically reach 10–30 cm tall and spread 20–40 cm, forming neat edging, rock garden drifts, or spilling container rims. The wild type bears white blossoms, while cultivars range from lavender and pink to deep purple. Bloom is most profuse in cool conditions—from spring to early summer and again in autumn—and may slow in high heat. In mild climates it can behave as a short-lived perennial or reseed lightly, yet it is usually grown as a cool-season annual. With modest water, lean soil, and full sun to light shade, sweet alyssum delivers long seasons of fragrance, pollinator support, and low-maintenance color.

  • Japanese barberry

    Berberis thunbergii, commonly known as Japanese barberry, is a compact, deciduous shrub prized for its dense, arching form and colorful foliage that ranges from bright green to deep burgundy in many cultivars. Small, pale yellow spring flowers are followed by bright red berries that persist into winter and attract birds. Stout, sharp spines line the stems, making it an excellent barrier plant. It tolerates a wide range of soils, urban pollution, and pruning, and once established is notably drought tolerant. Foliage color is best in full sun, while partial shade is acceptable with slightly looser habit and greener leaves. Widely planted in landscapes for hedges, foundation plantings, and low-maintenance borders, it is invasive in many regions of North America, where it escapes into woodlands and outcompetes native understory plants. Gardeners should check local regulations and consider sterile or non-invasive alternatives where restrictions apply.

  • Bear’s breeches

    Acanthus mollis, commonly called bear’s breeches, is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial native to the Mediterranean. It is prized for its bold, glossy, deeply lobed leaves forming a dramatic basal rosette and for tall, architectural flower spikes with white, two-lipped blooms hooded by purple-brown, spiny bracts. Flowering typically occurs from late spring to midsummer, creating strong vertical accents in borders and Mediterranean-style plantings. In mild climates it may be semi-evergreen; in colder areas it dies back and re-emerges in spring from fleshy roots. Once established, it tolerates summer drought but performs best with steady moisture and good drainage, especially in calcareous or neutral soils. Plants spread by thick roots and can persist for many years, so choose a placement thoughtfully. Historically, its leaf form inspired the Corinthian order in classical architecture and remains a celebrated motif in art and design. Use as a specimen or at woodland edges where its coarse texture contrasts with finer foliage.

  • Lax spruce

    Picea laxa is a medium to large, evergreen conifer native to high mountains of western China. It typically forms a narrowly conical to pyramidal crown with somewhat lax, slightly pendulous branchlets that give the tree a softer outline than many spruces. Needles are 1.5–2.5 cm long, four-sided, and dark to grey‑green with faint stomatal lines; they are borne around the twig and emit a resinous scent when crushed. Mature height commonly reaches 20–30 m, occasionally taller in ideal, cool sites. Cones are cylindrical‑ovoid, about 6–12 cm long, with thin, rounded scales that ripen from green to pale brown in a single season. In its native range it grows on cool, moist, subalpine slopes and valleys, often with firs and larches, contributing to watershed protection and wildlife cover. In cultivation it prefers cool summers, consistent soil moisture, and acidic, well‑drained soils. It is best suited to temperate climates with cold winters.

  • Spinach

    Spinacia oleracea, commonly known as spinach, is a cool-season annual leafy vegetable in the Amaranthaceae family. It forms a low rosette of tender, dark to medium green leaves that vary from smooth to savoyed depending on cultivar. Plants are typically dioecious (separate male and female plants), producing inconspicuous green flowers that are wind-pollinated, followed by small seeds (traditionally spiny, now often smooth in modern varieties). Spinach grows rapidly in cool weather and is prized for its mild, slightly mineral flavor and high levels of folate, vitamin K, carotenoids, and iron, as well as naturally occurring oxalates and nitrates. Shallow-rooted and sensitive to heat and long days, it tends to bolt quickly under warm conditions or drought stress. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soils with ample organic matter and consistent moisture. Best grown in early spring and fall, spinach is suitable for in-ground beds, raised beds, or containers, and is harvested by individual leaf picking or cutting whole rosettes before flowering.

  • Red clover

    Trifolium pratense, commonly known as red clover, is a short-lived perennial legume in the pea family (Fabaceae) valued for forage, cover cropping, and pollinator support. It forms a leafy crown with trifoliate leaves marked by a pale V-shaped chevron and produces dense, rose-red to magenta, globose flower heads 1.5–3 cm across from late spring through fall. Plants typically reach 20–80 cm tall and develop a stout taproot with fibrous laterals that improve soil structure and drought resilience. As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it hosts Rhizobium bacteria that form root nodules and supply much of its nitrogen needs, reducing fertilizer inputs. Red clover thrives in cool, temperate climates and well-drained loams with near-neutral pH. It is widely used in pastures, hay, green manure rotations, and as a nectar source for bumblebees and other pollinators. While often grown agriculturally, it can be cultivated in containers or garden beds, where regular cutting encourages bushy growth and repeated flowering over its typical 2–3 year lifespan.
